It started off with a very serious call over air traffic control “I’ve got a serious situation here. My pilot has gone incoherent. I have no idea how to fly the airplane,” the passenger said.
The report that was filed states "the Cessna Caravan took off from Leonard M. Thompson International Airport in the Bahamas, and was over the Florida coastline, when the pilot became “incapacitated,” and the unidentified passenger took over the controls and radioed for help".
An air traffic control was outside reading a book when he was asked to assist the landing since he had flight skills. He had never flown a Cessna Caravan BUT was able to look at photos of the cockpit online and talk the passenger through the landing.
Once they found the man and his plane on radar, they were able to guide him to the appropriate runway at P.B.I. Airport and glide him right him. He landed without issue and met the Air Traffic Controler on the tarmac where they hugged it out.
Robert Morgan, the controller , said “It felt really good to help somebody and he told me that he couldn’t wait to get home and hug his pregnant wife!”
