PETA Asks the Internet to "Bring Home the Bagels" In Animal Friendly List

Animal rights activists say they want people to switch out common expressions like "Bringing home the bacon" and "Kill two birds with one stone," with things like "Bring home the bagels" and "Feed two birds with one scone."

"Words matter," PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) wrote on their Facebook page Tuesday. "And as our understanding of social justice evolves, our language evolves with it. Just as it would be unacceptable to use racist, homophobic, or ableist language, phrases that trivialize cruelty to animals will vanish as more people begin to appreciate animals for who they are and start "bringing home the bagels" instead of the bacon.'"

The animal rights organization posted a color-coded chart with offensive phrases outlined in red and their happier, animal-friendly versions in green.

As you might expect, PETA's post quickly went viral, with many commenters bashing the animal rights organization for trying to regulate how people speak.

In a follow-up comment on the post, PETA defended their push to change phrases, pointing out that the way people speak, has an influence on the world around them.

"No one can stop language from changing, but you can push it in new directions. At PETA, we would like to see language reflect more compassionate and contemporary attitudes about animals. They're not ours to exploit."

Unfortunately for PETA, that didn't seem to stop people from mercilessly roasting the organization in the comments on the post.

However, many others liked what PETA was doing, and defended the new expressions, with some people even adding their own to the mix.

For their part, PETA seems to revel in the attention, writing on Twitter Wednesday that they wanted to use the user-generated suggestions.

"To the haters: with so much negativity in the world, why not lighten up and use language in a way that encourages being kind to animals?" the animal rights group wrote. "To everyone else: add your own anti-speciesist phrases below!"
